Says
Kargil responsibility claimed in greater
national interest
DUBAI—Exiled former premier Nawaz Sharif has
said he had taken responsibility for some
military generals’ “mess-up” in Kargil in the
best interest of the nation and that he would
soon reveal the truth.
“I will reveal the truth soon but in in-camera
proceedings. In fact, I had taken responsibility
for some military generals’ mess-up in Kargil on
my shoulder in the best interest of the nation,”
Sharif said in an interview to ‘Gulf News’
daily. Sharif had earlier said that he came to
know about invasion of Kargil after he received
a phone call from then Indian Prime Minister
Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The Kargil episode took place when General
Pervez Musharraf was the Chief of Army in 1999.
“In fact, Musharraf breached his oath as army
chief when he (had) overthrown my government
through a military coup in October 1999,” Sharif
said. Sharif, the chief of Pakistan Muslim
League (PML-N) and another former Prime Minister
Benazir Bhutto, the leader of Pakistan Peoples
Party (PPP), met in Dubai on Friday to discuss
strategies to involve other political parties in
their historic ‘Charter of Democracy’ they
signed in London last month to oust military
from politics.
“We got together again ... To discuss the
current political situation and to fine-tune the
agenda for meeting of the alliance for
restoration of the democracy (ARD) scheduled to
be held in London on July 2,” said Sharif.(INP)

News said that he would reveal the truth soon

Sharif was recently accused of breaching the
oath as a Prime Minister by Mohammad Ali Durrani,
Pakistan’s Information Minister, for his recent
statement that the military operation in Kargil
in 1999 was launched without his knowledge when
he was Prime Minister and that he came to know
about it after a call from his Indian
counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
